Àlvaro Matías, director of the Madrid Design Festival 2022, confirms : the event is ” open, transversal and integrative“. His idea? Bring together Spanish and even international design players and also offer space for reflection. Decryption.

A thousand reasons to go to the Madrid Design Festival

Peter Saville, rock star of graphic design who went from music to fashion, just like his friend the architect and designer Patricia Urquiola, received the Grand Prix of the 2022 Festival.

Alvaro Matías is ambitious : the Madrid Design Festival presents 228 exhibitions, 23 installations, 186 museums, shops, showrooms, museums or galleries. This concerns a total of 1662 designers, and last but not least. At the start of the festival, visitors could listen to lectures by the Spanish designer and architect Patricia Urquiola and the graphic designer Peter Saville on the same stage.

Peter Saville (1955) – known for his cult 80s covers, from Brian Ferry to New Order to Joy Division – was a hit. He has a unique way of talking about all aspects of his work, in a tone that is not devoid of irony. He recently revamped the image of the Calvin Klein brand, designed a new monogram for Burberry and even a logo for the city of Manchester. The dilemmas between him and the marketing departments while working on Yohji Yamamoto’s anti-consumerism commercials greatly amused the audience. But the designer has the honesty to say that he ” claimed to change somethingand not that he embodied a revolution in progress. We will have understood that after he has passed from the world of music to that of fashion, he does not really have the mind commercial

When he received the main prize of the festival, Patricia Urquiola . won (1961) had just received his. The designer and architect, born in Oviedo in Asturias but living in Milan for twenty years, immediately indicated that she ” Spanish Deciphering some of her projects with her architect’s acumen, she finally delivered a masterful feat, between design lessons and human adventure.

Architecture of La Luz

In the city, at the Fernán Gomez Centro Cultural de la Villa, the Fiat Lux branch. 3 by designer Antoni Arola had created a whole space of light to immerse yourself in. Among other things, visitors admired the branches of shrubs jutting into the sky against a backdrop of red or blue penumbra, with swirls of light surrounding them, all while being part of this illusion. With the know-how of the Simon Electric company, the designer thus contributes to spreading a culture of light.

Matador

The Madrid Design Festival combines design with different disciplines.Since 1995, the large format magazine Matador only comes out once a year. His field? Art and actually all contemporary ideas. The exhibition in honor of 25 years Matadorshows photographs that have illustrated literary or photographic subjects as well as a giant tapestry by designer Jaime Hayon, the exploits of chef Ferran Adria, artists Carsten Holler or Eduardo Chillida. This goes from the XXL carpet to the signed bottle of wine.

Essential Beauty

The event in Madrid also celebrates the architecture in the Ico Museum † Until next May 9th the exhibition Essential Beautyintroduces the work of the German architect Anna Heringer, known for her projects in earth or bamboo, from Bangladesh to Morocco. Whether it is a school or an adult training center, it intervenes by always immersing itself in the local customs while accurately identifying the needs. The architect uses local materials and mobilizes craftsmen from the area, both in Zimbabwe and in the Voralberg region, the laboratory of ideas for Austrian architects. The result is buildings that are far from at odds with each other: Heringer seems in his element everywhere.

Also in the Ico museum, the exhibition inferences, inferences –retrospective of the course of the il.ilacions gallery in Barcelona -, unfolds some fifty creations that can be used for the most part on a daily basis. At the Museum of Decorative Arts, designers Tomas Alonso and Jorge Penades asked their colleagues to create objects that reflect the works in the museum. On display in the exhibitionextraperlountil April 17.

Gandia Blasco

On the showroom side, at Gandia Blasco, the outdoor design house celebrates its 81st birthday without forgetting its textile roots. The reworked photos of Alejandra Gandia Blasco, creative director of Diabla, one of the company’s brands, inspireSunset, prototype of a large tapestry evoking a sunset as painted by Rothko. We also remember the amazing stability of the Costuras couture textile poufs by Italian architect and designer Teresa Sappey. In another room, designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón has a tapestry made from recycled materials reminiscent of the Niger River from the air.
