In Nantes, near Bourdonnières High School, ESEAN (follow-up and rehabilitation services for children and young people), open since February 2010welcomes children and young people, aged 0 to 18.
A place managed by APF France Handicap, and where relatives make everyday life easier for young people.
Three care units
The building consists of one floor and has three care units: a conventional inpatient unit, a day care ward open from 8.45 to 5.45pm and a rehabilitation unit with physiotherapy, occupational therapy or balneotherapy.

“We have 55 full hospital beds and about 30 for day hospitalizations,” explains Karine Couillères, head of ESEAN coordination.

Within the Nantes building, children with various pathologies are welcomed for problems related to the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, respiratory disorders, digestive diseases but also onco-hematological.
It is a healthcare institution whose main tasks are long-term.
Together with Bordeaux, ESEAN in Nantes is the only establishment of its kind on the Atlantic coast. Children from all over western France, but also young people from Guyana are admitted here on medical advice.

The hospital’s tasks consist of re-educating and reintegrating the young person into his home, but a “pediatric care is also planned for long-term conditions that require a more or less long hospital stay”.
Schooling and entertainment
Family room, classroom, restaurants, bedrooms for children, several rooms run along the hallway on the first floor.
Upstairs we meet Khalid. In his room, the hospitalized young boy is accompanied by a nurse. All morning, Khalid’s smile lit up every corner of ESEAN.

The rooms are divided into two sectors: a “Girafe” inpatient unit, which receives children from Monday to Friday, and a “Diver” inpatient unit, which receives children on an ongoing basis, for those who cannot go home to sleep.
“During the year we arrange activities with the children. In the coming days we will be hosting an educational farm,” says Karine Couillères.

From kindergarten to high school, inpatients follow a traditional education thanks to the intervention of National Education teachers. Interveners such as social assistance are also present on site from Monday to Friday.

On a daily basis, ESEAN teams mobilize to enable young patients to reintegrate. Throughout the care, caregivers and children smile to prepare for the future.
