Samsung Space Monitor reader testers: opinions on design and ergonomics

6

Our three reader testers have been evaluating the 32-inch Samsung Space Monitor screen as part of their daily activity for over a month. Unboxing, ergonomics of the stand, screen design… Zoom in on a monitor that is out of the ordinary .

The design of the monitor is a success. The thin bezels around the screen (8 mm and 1.5 cm at the bottom) and the textured matte plastic bring real sobriety to the whole.

The box contains the display, stand, legal documentation and a dual HDMI/power cable. The two parts are mounted in one step with the supplied screws. Installation is very easy thanks to the clamping system that allows the base of the screen to be attached to the end of a table or desk. This clever fastening system frees up space on the worktop.

In terms of connectivity, this display has an HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort connector, and a power connector. Note the absence of a USB hub or hub.

For hardware reasons, I used a DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPort cable (not included) to connect the display. If you use the supplied HDMI/power cable, the integrated cable management system in the foot works perfectly: the cable then fits perfectly in the space provided and is therefore almost invisible. This is not the case with my Mini DisplayPort cable, because it is too thick.

I use the screen almost at eye level on the desk. While the incline is stable and the controls simple, I still notice a small problem when I adjust the position of the screen: it wobbles from right to left for a few seconds before stabilizing completely.

The screen design is a success. The thin bezels around the screen (8 mm and 1.5 cm at the bottom) and the textured matte plastic bring real sobriety to the whole. In use, this screen is very practical, but a little frustrating: the tilt adjustment by a single arm severely limits positioning. A double arm would offer more options.

Samsung manages to save me a lot of work space. The quality of the mounting even makes it possible to place the screen over a set of drawers on my desk.

The first thing that surprised me when I opened the box was the hinged arm of the display. It gives a feeling of firmness due to the weight and quality of the joints. Then comes the record that is almost limitless† Finally, we find a power cable included with the HDMI cable (which is a great idea to avoid having a lot of wires hanging down). Note the presence of a leaflet that acts as an announcement, but does not bring much, as well as a CD.

Assembly is very easy. The first observation is that Samsung has managed to save me a lot of space. The quality of the mounting even makes it possible to place the screen over a set of drawers on my desk.

The second observation is the overall quality of the finish. The design of the screen is sober and elegant. Behind the foot there is a small channel to hide the cables, which is far from a detail.

The only downside is the lack of connections with only a Mini DisplayPort, a USB and an HDMI. Note that there is also no integrated audio system.

The articulated arm is very useful. I use the screen in console mode when working with my laptop and in classic mode otherwise. Plus, I need a large workspace to draw, and sometimes I find myself lifting the screen all the way to free up my entire desk. Navigating the settings interface is easy with the joystick on the back of the monitor.

The manipulation of the screen, with its tilt system that goes up to touch the desk, is easy. We end with a simple hook to the work plan (but solid), which saves a significant amount of space.

First observation when unpacking: this beautiful 32-inch Samsung screen is well protected. Thanks to the polystyrene reinforcement, the monitor will not break easily during transport.

In the package is a user manual (not very useful, because the product is easy to use) with a 2-in-1 HDMI power and video cable (the two are combined so as not to have just one cable behind the screen).

As you would expect, this screen is “plug and play”. Just plug in and it works! The default settings are very good for office use, but experts will be able to improve the display very well thanks to a rather intuitive OSD (“on-screen display”) menu.

Its robust base gives confidence in the quality of the product. The manipulation of the screen, with its tilt system that goes up to touch the desk, is easy. We end with a simple hook to the work plan (but solid), which saves a significant amount of space. During the test, I did not manipulate the arm much, because the size of the screen (32 inches) is too large for office use for my taste. I rather recommend a 27 inch in this type of configuration, which is more pleasant to handle on a daily basis.

Note that the original cable fits snugly into one of the two small grooves provided, making it completely invisible. On the other hand, I added a Mini DisplayPort cable and unfortunately it doesn’t fit in the other groove. I also regret that there is no replicated USB-C port. A connector that is becoming increasingly common on new devices and smartphones.

The design is understated and elegant, without wasting unnecessary space. The only decorative element of the screen is 1.5 cm below the screen with the Samsung logo and the power light. However, this slider has a tendency to capture fingerprints… Maniacs will therefore avoid manipulating the screen too often. Finally, I also regret the lack of height adjustment, especially for standing workstations.

Based on their initial feedback, our three readers must have judged the Samsung Space Monitor’s strong point, which is the hinged base that attaches to the worktop. It is clear that Samsung has succeeded in its commitment. The ingenious mounting system is easy to hang and the promise of space-saving on the desk is there. The hinged arm seems very efficient and allows you to perfectly adjust the position of the screen to your working posture. The integrated cable pass is also much appreciated, even if it will be difficult to hide a Mini DisplayPort cable. On the area of improvement, note that our readers criticize the Space Monitor for a minimalist connection and the absence of usually welcome frills such as an external USB hub or integrated speakers. A drop of water in an ocean of success. See you next week to discuss the display quality of the 32-inch Samsung Space Monitor panel.
