GIGABYTE RX 6950 XT GAMING OC, what do you think?

It’s the big day, graphics cards AMD Radeon RX 6X50 XT have finally been officially launched and on this page and the next we will focus on the graphics card test GIGABYTE RX 6950 XT GAMING OC 16G† So we will look at performance in application and in gaming, while looking at consumption and temperatures. Without further ado, let’s get started and see what this card is from GIGABYTE has in the abdomen.

Before we start, let’s specify that we’re here on a card dedicated to gaming in 2160p: this is AMD’s new flagship. It’s more intended to compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 than the 3090 Ti. AMD announces that its RX 6950 XT accompanied by the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU is faster than the RTX 3090 in gaming accompanied by an i9-12900K. For example, this is on the order of 1.15x on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (a game that loves AMD GPUs), 1.07x on Borderland 3 or even 1.04x on Valorant not to recite anyone but them.

We are on the GPU Navi 21 accompanied by 16 GB GDDR6 memory therefore working at 18 Gbps on the RX 6950 XT versus 16 Gbps on the RX 6900 XT. We have a 128 MB Infinity Cache, all on a 256-bit bus. the GPU Navi 21 has 5120 Shading Units for 80 CU (Compute units). Each of these CUs contains a Ray Accelerators specifically for Ray Tracing. We have a bandwidth of 576 Gbps. With Infinity Cache, the effective bandwidth is 1793 Gbps. The GPU Boost frequency is 2324 MHz against 2310 MHz on the reference card.

Let’s start by remembering the price: the RX 6950 XT is announced for $1099 ($549 the RX 6750 XT and $399 the 6750 XT). GIGABYTE informs us that the suggested retail price is: 1259 euros for the Radeon RX 6950 XT. In practice, we can find our card from GIGABYTE for the price of 1499.95 euros at LDLC or 1479.99 euros at Top Achat

We will not be out of place in terms of packaging. Indeed, as usual we find a black background and orange accents with on the front the image of the mechanical eye of the falcon. We have of course the different logos and main technologies used. On the back we learn more about the specifications of the card.

Speaking of the bundle, we’re pretty disappointed for such a high-end card. Indeed, we only have a short user manual.

GIGABYTE RX 6950 XT GAMING OC: visual aspect

Visually we recognize the design that the brand has already used on its previous models, but here we are on larger dimensions. We’re on a board with a triple 100mm fan cooling system. Note that the central fan spins in the opposite direction to the other two to create better airflow by reducing turbulence. The radiator here uses eight heatpipes compared to six on the brand’s RX 6900 XT GAMING OC. We also have 3D Active Fan technology to stop the fans below a certain temperature threshold to keep a silent card at rest.

We find a nice back plate with the GIGABYTE logo on the right and a series of geometric lines in a lighter shade. Note the opening on the right that gives a view of the radiator. This helps to create an airflow all the way through the radiator rather than blocking warm air into the shroud.

Regardless of the part of the card, the design is pretty much the same. The aluminum radiator is exposed and there is a little fairing with the RADEON logo on the left and the GIGABYTE logo on the right. The three 8-pin PCIe ports are on the right side.

In terms of connectivity, this card offers two DisplayPort 1.4a ports and two HDMI 2.1 ports. On the other hand, nothing special to report, we only see the fairing with the inscription “GAMING SERIES” on a small glossy plastic rim. Note that we have a 2.9 slot form factor.

In this reference we find a physical switch to change the BIOS. These two BIOSes simply allow a different ventilation profile setting. Silent mode prefers silence and will therefore be less brutal to the ventilation, while OC mode will make the fans spin faster for the same given temperature.

We find a small area of RGB lighting on the edge of the GIGABYTE logo. Via the internal GIGABYTE RGB FUSION 2.0 software we can control this lighting and whether or not synchronize it with other compatible components and peripherals.
