The all-in-one computer deserves to exist

In addition to the traditional computer or PC with the desktop computer, the laptop or even the ultraportable and the workstation, there are other possibilities such as the 2-in-1 computer and the convertible, not to forget all-in-one computer which is also known as all-in-one.

By definition, an all-in-one computer is a machine that sits between a desktop computer and a laptop computer with a single housing to bring together the display and components of a central processing unit, as well as the audio system. The applications can vary from office automation to the creative aspect, in particular with the presence of a touchscreen that can facilitate its use in such a context.

With the advantage of saving space and space compared to a bulkier, full-featured conventional computer, all-in-one computers are in a sense a fusion between the screen and the computer. To equip yourself with an all-in-one PC, the proposals have evolved a lot over the years and several manufacturers are present in this niche (Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, MSI, etc.).

From Apple’s iconic iMac to the Microsoft Surface Studio

Among the iconic all-in-one computers there is undoubtedly theApple’s iMac† For the Apple brand, the iMac followed the move to Apple Silicon with an M1 chip that allows the latest 24-inch iMac to ditch the curved back in favor of a more compact and exceptionally thin design. The next iteration of the iMac may go straight to an M3 chip.

Microsoft also ventured into the all-in-one computer space by launching the Microsoft Surface Studio. The Surface Studio 2 – already announced in 2018 – is being touted more as a business workstation and as a creative studio with accessories like the Surface Pen and Surface Dial. To see if Microsoft will try to transform the test with a Surface Studio 3 this year.

Of all the other brands that offer all-in-one computers, the Chinese manufacturer Lenovo recently decided to renew its Yoga AIO 7. With flexible hinge for a tilt of 5° at the front and up to 15° at the back, it has the originality of being equipped with a swivel screen that can be rotated 90°. Enough to allow orientation in landscape or portrait mode.

Points of attention for the all-in-one

The screen will be a very important element to consider when choosing an all-in-one computer. With different panel types and definition up to 4K, the size of a screen can exceed 27 inches for greater user comfort. This necessarily plays on the clutter with the computer. A format of at least 23 inches diagonally seems to be a basic choice for such a type of device.

Depending on the intended use, another point is to see if the all-in-one computer has a dedicated graphics card. This is not often the case, although it will have an impact if the video game aspect is not ruled out. However, it will generally not be about turning an all-in-one computer into a solution for gamers.

For the rest of the components, the choices are ultimately the same as for other types of computers, depending on the power you want (with the amount of RAM and SSD storage), knowing that all-in-one computers tend to use more powerful processors than laptops. It will be necessary to monitor connectivity and keep in mind that scalability will rarely be required.

This aspect of lack of scalability can argue against an all-in-one solution compared to a desktop computer, just as portability – or mobility – logically moves towards choosing a laptop. Still, there is no mystery, the more the user will demand regarding the desired configuration and the more the bill will rise. As for Apple’s 24-inch iMac with M1 chip, the price range goes from $1,450 to over $2,800 excluding peripherals and accessories.

In its forecasts up to 2025 and with regard to the EMEA zone (Europe, Middle East and Africa), research firm IDC has anticipated a decline in deliveries of all-in-one type computers. However, it should be less pronounced than the decline for traditional computers, while shipments of ultraportables and convertibles should increase.
