On May 16, 2002, Lucasfilm released Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, the second film in the prequel trilogy. It was received with bad reviews at the time, although time has colored opinions and changed the general view of these three films. On its 20th anniversary, we remember some of the most interesting events that have shaped the future of the galactic saga to date.
Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen played Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, respectively, two main characters from the Star Wars universe who will find themselves in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, the long-awaited Disney + series. Below we divide Attack of the Clones into six main points:
- Apprentice and teacher, a friction relationship
- Anakin flirts with the dark side
- The Clone Army of the Republic
- The love story between Anakin and Padmé Amidala
- Count Dooku, apprentice of Darth Sidious
- The Clone Wars begin
Apprentice and teacher, a friction relationship
Anakin Skywalker’s personality contrasts with that of his masters. While Obi-Wan Kenobi is patient, his apprentice shows impulsive traits, causing him to follow his instincts in most situations. An experienced pilot, at the start of Attack of the Clones, he shows that his abilities with ships have only improved, although Kenobi is not so happy to fly with him. Anakin believes that his master limits his progress as a Jedi, and although he loves him as the father he has never had, they experience tense moments.
Anakin flirts with the dark side
“Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hatred, hatred leads to pain. I sense a lot of fear in you,” Master Yoda told Anakin when they first met. The Jedi Order selects Force-sensitive individuals when they are very young, but in the case of young Skywalker, it was Master Qui-Gon Jinn who fell upon him.Since he was sent to Coruscant to be trained as a Jedi, the boy has suffered during his mother’s absence and constantly worried about his well-being.
Pursued by terrible nightmares and visions, he returns to Tatooine with the intention of rescuing his mother. When he arrives, he discovers that he has been taken in by Tusken, the Sand People. Shmi Skywalker dies in Anis’ arms, who react by murdering the entire Tusken tribe. This is the beginning of his fall to the dark side.
The Clone Army of the Republic
A system lost in the galaxy, a planet unknown even to the Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues this mysterious world, which has been erased from the library’s records. The professor discovers Kamino and lands on this planet with violent water and eternal rain. After being greeted by the Prime Minister, he tells him that the Jedi Order and the Republic have commanded a clone army. Created in the image and likeness of Jango Fett, Boba Fett’s father, the Cloners managed to speed up the process so that soldiers mature quickly and correctly obey the orders of their superiors. In fact, everything responds to a dark conspiracy orchestrated by Darth Sidious, the Sith hidden behind the false appearance of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.
The love story between Anakin and Padmé Amidala
Star Wars Episidio II: Attack of the Clones is an action movie, but also a love movie. Much has been criticized for the way George Lucas has treated the relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala, former Queen of Naboo. Several scenes have been called corny, though the relationship is key to the events that will take place a few years later. Members of the Jedi Order cannot love, at least not in a conventional partnership. They fear that ties are the way to the dark side, so they also indulge in celibacy. Anakin Skywalker’s character, so addicted to his passionate personality, tries to avoid falling in love as if he could remember it. The couple finds themselves under the influence of love and marry in secret, which eventually forces them to live a secret life. John Williams composed the theme Across the Stars, music full of sensitivity that serves to portray this intense love story.
Count Dooku, apprentice of Darth Sidious
The Earl of Serenno, Dooku, was a veteran Jedi. Master of Qui-Gon Jinn, he always had an interest in prophecy. In time, he began to think differently about the Jedi Order until he finally decided to leave it. At one point he was seduced by the dark side of the force and became Darth Sidious’s apprentice, Darth Tyranus, thus participating in the order’s extermination plan as leader of the separatists. In Attack of the Clones, Anakin confronts Dooku and loses his hand. The Siths then battle against the old but powerful Master Yoda in Force.
The Clone Wars begin
Something is happening on Geonosis, a planet inhabited by sentient insects, where separatist forces are involved in the plan to fight the galactic republic. It is a game composed by the Supreme Chancellor himself, who hidden under the faces of his position hides his true self, Darth Sidious. Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padmé are sentenced to death in the arena, a verdict that is tried to be executed immediately. However, members of the Jedi Council and several knights arrive just in time to fight with Darth Tyranus’ hosts. When everything seems to be lost, Master Yoda lands with the clone army. The Clone Wars have just begun and with this battle also the beginning of the end of the Galactic Republic.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones can be enjoyed on Disney +, just like the rest of the saga’s merchandise. Obi-Wan Kenobi will be released on May 27 on the platform. The series takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, and the series will once again set Kenobi up against his former apprentice, now Lord Darth Vader.
