With his rocker style, Vincent Michon does not look like the job. And that’s good, because he’s not a teacher like the others. This inhabitant of Bignon (Loire Atlantique) has worked for 20 years next door traveling children.
“I integrated the system when it was created in the Loire-Atlantique in 2001,” explains the man, who at the time was only a young teacher at Rezenear Nantes.
Before, the children of the trip were almost systematic grouped together, in special classes. When National Education reviewed this principle and decided to integrate them with other students to bring wealth and diversity to all, it was necessary to develop funds to support them. Those who have the special know changes place regularly and therefore potentially have gaps in their learning.
A child traveler can stay a whole year in a school or change every 15 days. And since not all schools are progressing at the same pace, some may find that they have never learned a concept or, on the contrary, have seen one even more times. So our job is to reassemble the pieces.
7 teachers like him in the Loire-Atlantique
“Our work”, for Vincent Michon is obviously not alone. that Loire-Atlantique department account 6 more PREVs like him. All work closely within this academic system with two project managers (one for the elementary, the other for the secondary), responsible for identifying needs, and three inspectors, two of whom oversee the pedagogical plan and for the other the administrative aspect.
We all have regular meetings – and also only between teachers – to coordinate. It is all the more important that these students move from one sector to another so that it allows us to discuss the files.
“They develop great adaptability”
On a daily basis, Bignonnais travels in addition to these meetings a part of South vineyard to support families of travelers in schooling procedures of their children and provide educational assistance to those who need it.
We can offer support directly in class, but it is on the margins, also because it is time consuming. Most of the time, during the school day, the child is taken out of his class to offer it a session of about 45 minutes in a small group with 3 or 4 other students. These are short sessions, but it is voluntary, the idea is to promote their concentration and not create a break with the rest of the class.
In terms of content, it all depends student needs. Mathematics, French … Vincent Michon naturally follows the programs. And also work with those, like any teacher, the student’s attitude: “We learn how to behave in class, we work on perseverance …” Neither more nor less than with sedentary students. However, apart from that The travelers has by definition, fewer brands.
Some may be disturbed by changes in schools, teachers, friends … but in general they develop great adaptability. They even sometimes want to move on their own to see something else.
“I teach my former students’ children”
Like his students, so is Vincent Michon nomadic. And it suits him really well:
Colleagues tell me it must be hard, but on the contrary, I appreciate the time spent driving between two companies. It’s a moment for me where I can think about my job.
So what about the fact that you are not able to follow and support your students in the long run? Is it not frustrating ? “I have taken care of the class,” he says with a smile: “I missed the first years, it is true, to tell myself that I did not see the purpose of my lessons, but all this turned with time. For now, after 20 years, I see my former students’ children ”.
