ASRock Z690 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB4, good or bad?

Today we test the motherboard in the Hardware Kitchen ASRock Z690 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB4† It’s a Mini-ITX format motherboard that’s meant to be relatively high-end as we’re on the Intel Z690 chipset with connectivity meant to be complete. In this test, let’s see what this card is from ASRock has in the abdomen.

Let’s attack the hard and talk about the technical features. So we are on a Mini-ITX format and this card is based on the Intel LGA1700 socket with the Z690 chipset. It will therefore be compatible with the 12th generation Intel Core Alder Lake processors such as the i9-12900K, i7-12700K, etc. This motherboard format is particularly suitable for small format boxes such as the MasterBox NR200P from Cooler Master or even in the Phanteks Evolv SHIFT XT . For memory, here we have compatibility with DDR5 type memory up to a frequency of 6400 MHz in OC. Note that we only have two memory slots, so we can handle a maximum of 64 GB of RAM. Ask PCIe 5.0, we have the only PCIe 5.0 compatible x16 slot, the two slots for SSD in M.2 format remain in PCIe 4.0 and the second is also SATA compatible. Obviously, these M.2 slots have a heat sink to avoid thermal throttling.

For the power stage we find a configuration of 10+1+1 Renesas RAA22010540 SPS supply phases of 105A. Everything is controlled via a Renesas RAA229131 controller configured in 10+1. For the iGPU we have the Renesas ISL99360 reference of 60A. Note that the VRM cooling system is active on this motherboard as we have a fan under the rear connector cover.

On the rear connector we find an HDMI port to connect a screen without having to go through a dedicated graphics card, as well as a DisplayPort pot. We only have six USB ports in total, one of which is Type-C. Four are USB 3.2 Gen2 and the fifth is USB 3.2 Gen1. As for USB Type-C, it is also Thunderbolt 4 compatible. We will also have a header for USB 3.2 Gen 2 × 2 Type-C in the front panel of an enclosure, as well as a header for USB 3.2 Gen1 in Type-A .

In terms of design requires mini size, everything is compressed around the socket. As usual, we now have a color-in-black theme, but here we have a few red accents. Of course we have heat sinks to cool the components of the output stage. On the back of the card we have a backplate and directly at the bottom we notice the presence of an M.2 SSD slot.

Speaking of the connector cover, let’s first specify that it actually covers a small fan that will help cool the VRMs. For the rest we find the Phantom Gaming logo badge and the mention Z690 PHANTOM GAMING ITX/TB4. On the right side of the card we find the 24 pin power supply of the card. Below the latter we have the header from the front panel and then the header for the USB Type-A from the front panel of the case.
