Guybrush Threepwood is back and like any announcement of the return of a major license that has been on hiatus for many years, we remain torn between nostalgic memories of episodes that marked our childhood on PC (in VGA and especially SVGA) and the fear of no longer stick to the new proposal. A fear justified by the discovery of the video by a graphical bias that contrasts with the previous opus and of which we are clearly not fans at the moment.
Return to Monkey Island is the sequel to the first two works originally produced at the Lucasfilm Games studio by series creator Ron Gilbert, namely The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. We remember that Rion Gilbert had not participated in the design of the third opus. We had sensed it then, and if this third opus held up well, it wasn’t really on the same level as the two previous ones. We will be putting aside several opus such as Escape from Monkey Island and the Tales of Monkey Island, and here we are again to find our old acquaintances with Ron Gilbert at the helm again, and experienced collaborators, some of whom have already joined the first opus. had worked. We note the presence of co-writer and game designer Dave Grossman, artistic director Rex Crowle (Knights & Bikes, Tearaway) and composers Peter McConnell, Michael Land and Clint Bajakian (Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge).
It’s been years since Guybrush Threepwood fought his nemesis, zombie pirate LeChuck. His great love, Elaine Marley, has turned his back on the government, and Guybrush himself is adrift and disgruntled, having never found the secret of Monkey Island. Young pirate bosses led by Captain Madison drove the old guard from power, Mêlée Island deteriorated and famed businessman Stan was imprisoned for “marketing crimes.”
Play with old friends and new faces on familiar islands that are now under dangerous new management. Then take to the high seas and explore the new and the unknown as you navigate difficult situations. Clever puzzles, bizarre situations and devastating counter attacks are all that separate Guybrush from glory.
Return to the familiar gameplay and even landscapes always presented from the same point of view
Fan service and miscellaneous references seem to abound. The controls have been updated smoothly, with context sensitive interactions, there are still plenty of dialogue trees, inventory management won’t be a problem for younger players. As always, it will be necessary to solve several puzzles to explore the islands around Melee Island a bit more. Return of Monkey Island will be the conclusion of the series, so we can’t wait to discover this new adventure with the know-how of Ron Gilbert.
So why are we a little sad? It’s clearly the graphical evolution and design chosen by the team that contrasts a little too much with the old aesthetics we know, especially the SVGA ports. A very geometric cartoon mix that does not convince us but we leave the benefit of the doubt to see how everything will come to life during the story. Because it’s the quality of the story and the fun of finding well-known protagonists that will make the salt of this Return of Monkey Island, provided the whole concept holds up. The text in French is of course required in order not to lose players.
