The medical-psychological centers for children and adolescents in Thiers, Ambert and Cournon (Puy-de-Dôme) lack a child psychiatrist

Taking care of the mental health of children and young people suffering from disorders, between their birth and their majority, is the mission of the CMPEAs. East of the ward, there are three medico-psychological centers for children and adolescents, all managed by Thiers Hospital Center: in Ambert, Cournon-d’Auvergne, and Thiers.

Long months of waiting to be taken care of

An interdisciplinary team of health professionals puts them together: psychologists, specialist educators, psychotherapists, speech educators, art therapists and secretaries … And also child psychiatrists, who are crucial in a CMPEA.

Problem: Cécile Bazelle, the last child psychiatrist for the three centers, is moving towards other tasks at the end of July. And there is no replacement yet. “If there are drug treatments to prescribe, it will be necessary to turn to liberal doctors or pediatric emergencies,” points out the child psychiatrist, who condemns “a discipline that has been ignored by government policy for years.”

Thus, it takes twenty months of waiting time to get a psychomotor assessment, just as much for a time with a speech therapist. “We do not put the package on childhood, while we avoid later disorders with prompt care,” the health staff regrets.

family therapy. This psychotherapy technique aims to promote exchanges between family members, to overcome a crisis situation, to find new balances. From 1 September, consultations will take place: in Ambert on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and in Thiers on Mondays from 9.00 to 17.00 at registration.

Eating disorders, language delay, anxiety …

Because they respond to all types of difficulties, “from behavioral or eating disorders to developmental delays, including language delay, recurrent crying in a baby, extreme anxiety or the desire to change the sex of a teenager …”

Once the difficulties have been identified, different treatments are offered: assessments (speech therapy, psychological or psychomotor skills), individual treatments or therapeutic groups (equine therapy, painting, storytelling, cooking, gardening, etc.). “It can take three weeks, for example three months or three years … We adapt to each situation,” the child psychiatrist continues.

But with this departure, a reorganization must be considered.

“Children need to get a prescription from a GP or school doctor, a pediatrician, maternity and child protection … And there will be no more random people. There may be difficulties with diagnosis and continuity of treatment.”

Nevertheless, this “deteriorating condition” will not prevent families in need from being welcomed, “we remain present to care for children”, reassures Fabrice Bretel, socio-educational framework managing the three puydomoises antennae.
