Design, display and build

First, moving on to the design, the OPPO Reno8 5G looks attractive, the aesthetics are perfectly made and inspired by its flagship series of smartphones, the streamlined unibody makes it look spectacular with colorful highlights that you can see on its back. The OPPO Reno8 5G is available in two color variants: Shimmer Black and Shimmer Gold.

The surface on the back has a matte finish, which means it is anti-fingerprint, you can see the camera module fits seamlessly into the design. The sides are flat, the corners are round and it gives you a good grip when holding. The phone is 7.67 mm thick and weighs about 179 grams.

On the front you will find a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The screen is further equipped with a Full HD + resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels, 409 ppi), a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a refresh rate of 90.8% . screen to body ratio. You get an in-display fingerprint scanner to secure the phone and apps.

In addition, the screen has 600 nits of brightness which is sufficient for everyday use, 180Hz touch sampling rate, O1 Ultra Vision Engine, SGS Eye Care and is certified for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video HD. We couldn’t find an IP rating or water resistant design on the phone.

Compared to the Reno7 5G, the cameras have been upgraded, the Reno8 5G offers a triple camera setup on the back with two large modules and a small one with a Ring LED light. The main camera is 50 MP with a Sony IMX766 sensor, while the 32 MP selfie camera uses a Sony IMX709 sensor.

Moving to the sides, you get a green color themed power key on the right, while the left has two separate volume keys. The bottom has two slots for 5G SIM cards, no microSD card slot is available, a USB Type-C port for fast charging and data transfer, a microphone (another one on the top) and a speaker (single).

It would have been better if OPPO added another speaker to the Reno8 5G for stereo effects, found no storage expansion slot and no 3.5mm jack, you need a converter to connect your 3.5mm earphones/headphones Close.

Software and User Interface

The OPPO Reno8 5G runs on Android 12 with its latest internal interface, ColorOS 12.1 that we saw on the recent OPPO K10 5G smartphone. The security patch on the Reno8 5G is from June 5, 2022. You can expect 2 years of Android updates and 3 years of security updates.

The ColorOS 12 has been improved over the previous versions with a new user interface and smoother animations. Some of the features and highlights you’ll see include Omoji (animated emojis), flexible windows, always-on screen adjustments, edge lighting, fingerprint animations, rewind, background flow, FlexDrop, smart sidebar, and three-finger translation with Google Lens.

With the ColorOS 12.1 interface, you have plenty of tweaks and customizations, as well as some useful features to get the most out of it. You can switch between the 90 Hz and 60 Hz refresh rates, use the dark mode, eye comfort, and video color enhancement that the O1 Ultra Vision Engine uses to improve image/video quality at the same time.

The phone has TÜV SÜD 36-Month Fluency Rating A16 as stated by OPPO, the AI System Booster automatically adjusts to keep the phone running smoothly even after 3 years according to OPPO.

The UI performance is smooth and with no lag in our use, although you do get some pre-installed apps that you can uninstall if you don’t need them. The bloatware includes Moj, BYJUs, Josh, Dailyhunt, Facebook, Amazon, PhonePe, LinkedIn, Netflix and a few from OPPO.

Hardware, performance and games

One of the main highlights of the smartphone is the processor, the Reno8 5G is equipped with a new MediaTek Dimensity 1300 6nm octa-core SoC clocked up to 3.0 GHz, upgraded from the Dimensity 900 seen on its predecessor Reno7 5G. The CPU is a major upgrade that also adds faster UFS 3.1 storage and a better GPU (Mali-G77 MP9).

The MediaTek Dimensity is a fast octa-core SoC with 1+3+4 Cortex-A78/Cortex-A55 core configurations, one Cortex-A78 core clocked at 3.0 GHz for high performance, three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.6 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz for power efficiency. The on-chip GPU is from ARM Mali-G77 MP9 (9 cores) which seems to be much better for gamers compared to the previous GPU (Reno7 5G).

Speaking of RAM and storage options, there is only one variant available which is 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage with support for RAM expansion but no storage expansion. OPPO’s RAM extender can increase the RAM by up to an additional 5 GB, giving a total of 13 GB of additional RAM on the phone. This model costs 29,999 for 8GB RAM + 128GB storage, but can be purchased at a discounted price of 26,999.

CPU performance is very good in our usage, the Dimensity 1300 is indeed faster than the Dimensity 900 (Reno7 5G), Dimensity 920 (realme 9 Pro+), Dimensity 1000 (realme X7 Pro) and Dimensity 1200 (OnePlus Nord 2 5G). Our test suggests that apps and games run smoothly, gamers have an edge thanks to the faster 9-core GPU. You can play games on high settings without lag or performance problems, the GPU is good for gaming. The Reno8 5G features a superconducting VC liquid cooling system that keeps the device cool.

The Reno8 5G has a triple camera setup with a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera (1/1.56 inch sensor size) with two additional cameras, one 8MP wide angle and the other 2MP macro, aided by a dual LED flash. in ring shape. The front has a 32MP on-screen selfie camera with Sony’s IMX709 sensor. The low-light capabilities of the cameras are definitely the most important feature of the smartphone.

The camera features hardware-based DOL-HDR (Digital Overlap High Dynamic Range), which provides 4 times greater dynamic range, resulting in more color, more contrast and more detail in images and videos. DOL-HDR technology merges different lighting conditions into an image, so that bright and dark data are visible at the same time.

The camera uses OPPO’s 6nm MariSilicon X NPU for image processing and enables real-time RAW processing to capture 4K AI night video with live preview. It also comes with an omnidirectional PDAF with all pixels for better focus and object recognition. The photos are very satisfactory, especially in low light, see the attached samples.

Camera functions and modes include Portrait with background blur adjustment (also in videos), 0.6x wide angle, Pro, Extra HD, Pano, Macro, Slow Motion, Time-lapse, Dual View video, Sticker, Text scanner, Soloop patterns , plus beauty modes and filters. The camera supports 4K video recording at 30 fps, 1080p video recording at 60 fps and offers Ultra Steady mode (1080p) for stable videos.

Battery life and charging

Moving on to the battery size, you get a 4500mAh battery that supports an incredibly fast 80W SuperVOOC charge, which can charge the smartphone to 50% in 11 minutes and give you 2 hours of playtime in just 5 minutes of charge. The 80W fast charging is definitely one of the best features of this phone. We’ve seen a lot of smartphones, but to be honest, a fast charger really helps you get there if you’re in a rush.

As for the battery, it uses 2x 2250mAh batteries which have a dual configuration to make charging efficient, it uses a double cell battery, you can assume that two different batteries are charged at the same time with 40W. The phone supports 80W SuperVOOC, 65W SuperVOOC, 50W SuperVOOC, 30/33W VOOC, PD (9V/2A) and QC (9V/2A). The phone will last about 2 days with average use and more than a day with moderate use, but it all depends on your usage.

Verdict – OPPO Reno8 5G

The OPPO Reno8 5G offers a promising processor – the Dimensity 1300 is quite fast in the ₹25K to ₹30K price segment, leaving a lot of phones behind in terms of performance. Sony cameras are extremely reliable and meet your needs in low light and selfies. And the best thing is the great 80W SuperVOOC fast charger, which can charge your phone much faster, it takes about 11 minutes to charge to 50%. Other than that, the 90Hz AMOLED display is good, there are plenty of ColorOS 12.1 features and an attractive design. For users who are looking for performance, reliable cameras and super fast charging, you can’t go wrong with the OPPO Reno8 5G, the smartphone is a must for users with this budget.
