“Between 150 and 250 children a day” will be introduced to sports activities at the Green Stadium in Auxerre this summer

“He who does not jump is not Auxerrois!” The supporters’ traditional song echoed on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at the edge of the soccer field’s inflatable structure at the Parc de l’Arbre-sec in Auxerre. Very close to Abbé-Deschamps, young shoots come to learn about a variety of sports activities. As part of Det Grønne Stadion, an operation led by the City and renewed for the fourth year.

Children register for free at the town hall. This registers them on a list which allows them to participate in the activities of their choice whenever they want, every afternoon of the week (from 14:00 to 17:30). On the program this Wednesday: kayaking, baseball, archery, cycling or football. Emmanuel Bruguet, trainer and coordinator of the Green Stadium, explains the choice of activities: “We make sure there is a logical mix with a resistance sport, a combat sport and a skill sport.”

In pause mode during the orange heat wave alert

Since the beginning of July, the weather has been fine and the heat very present in Yonne. This requires organizers of sporting events to adapt. As during the heat wave episode in mid-July: “We did not open the two days when we were on heat wave orange alert, and if there is another orange alert for thunderstorms or strong winds, we will not open either”, clarifies the coordinator.

The postponement in the gymnasiums was also not possible: “With the heat wave, it was even hotter in the gymnasiums than outside.” Jennifer, in charge of the cycling activity, adds: “People are quite well equipped, they arrive with their caps and their water bottles.” This year, the municipality has decided to add a fountain to the Arbre-sec grounds, bringing the number up to two and giving the children the opportunity to drink water.

From water skiing to soccer among many others, the activities offered by the city’s sports department are all free. And supervised by “seasonal workers, teachers from the city of Auxerre, but also by certain clubs in the city that give us a hand with martial arts or archery”, confides Emmanuel Bruguet. At the Parc de l’Arbre-Sec, courts are freely accessible, such as the handball court

This Wednesday afternoon, the sun is very present and many young people use the stands: “We have between 150 and 250 children a day”, estimates the secretary in charge of reception. “We shoot in 30-minute slots per activity, so young people try to discover more of them. But if the child does not like one of the sports, we do not force him, he can do something else”, emphasizes his Jennifer’s page .

“They seem to appreciate it, I will definitely be back”

On the banks of the Yonne in the Parc de l’Arbre-Sec, many families are present. Some are coming for the first time, like Sofian, who found the site by accident: “I was walking around with my kids and I came across the animation. It’s great for people who can’t go on vacation.” Michèle came with her great nephews. She heard about Green Stadium on the radio.

“It’s a good animation and they seem to like it, I’ll definitely be back many times.” Leisure centers and certain associations take their children. “It gives them the opportunity to discover sports”, explains a member of an Auxerre association.

For certain activities such as water skiing, it is advisable to make a reservation. “We only have eight places, the place is for two hours and it cannot be extended”, explains Emmanuel Bruguet. Others like fishing, despite a limited number of places, it does not require registration too far in advance.
