Exploration initiatives of the metaverse are proliferating, and it is becoming increasingly common for companies to acquire land and/or set up shop inside the metaverse. Several brands, institutions and even universities are following the trend closely and have taken it upon themselves to launch their expansion strategy in the metaverse. Educational institutions recognize the advantages that the metaverse offers as a tool to facilitate educational and pedagogical processes. Two of Asia’s most prominent universities recently announced their plans to integrate the metaverse into their curricula, each in quite different ways.

L’the university of tokyo, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in Japan, will introduce a series of courses based on the metaverse this year. These courses will focus on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship education and next-generation communication technologies. The goal is twofold: First, it is to introduce high school students to the possible career paths at the University of Tokyo in engineering and information science. Secondly, this initiative must make it possible to remedy the lack of qualified personnel in the handling of digital tools and new technologies in the university environment.

But despite all the media frenzy surrounding the metaverse, entering this universe is far from easy, whether for professionals (as evidenced by the lack of progression of Meta) or for ordinary citizens in their daily lives. Although the use of the metaverse in a professional environment is considered one of the most promising areas of application for this tool, the results of a study conducted by researchers fromUniversity of Coburgof’Cambridge Universityof’University of Primorska and off Microsoft Research paint a very different and more pessimistic picture.
