Memtest86 is a free, standalone memory testing software for x86 and Arm computers. It runs from USB sticks to test your computer’s RAM for errors using algorithms that have been developed for over 20 years.

Unreliable RAM can cause a number of problems. Data corruption, crashes, and other unexplained behavior. Bad RAM is one of the most frustrating computer problems because the symptoms are often random and difficult to pinpoint. MemTest86 can help diagnose faulty RAM (or rule it out as the cause of system instability).

MemTest86 is used for both industrial (PC/CPU/motherboard/RAM manufacturers) and consumer (system builders, overclockers, computer enthusiasts).

MemTest86 supports all current technologies:

  • 13 different RAM test algorithms – including knock error detection*
  • All supported RAM types (DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, DDR5, SODIMM, XMP, ECC)
  • Auto boot from USB or boot from network (PXE)*, no need for DOS, Linux or Windows
  • Optimized for UEFI-based x86/ARM systems
  • 64-bit native code (from version 5)
  • ECC* and injection fault detection
  • Secure Boot Verified – Code signed by Microsoft
  • GUI with mouse input
  • Record logs and create customizable HTML reports
  • Full automation of testing through a configuration file
  • Memory blacklist support in Windows (badmemorylist) and Linux (BADRAM)
  • Multi-language support (Chinese, German, Russian, Spanish and more)

What’s new

Fixes/improvements

  • Added a new config file parameter, ‘MAXCPUS’, to set the maximum number of logical CPU cores used for testing. By default, this value is 256 (Pro edition) and 16 (free version). This parameter can be set to a maximum value of 512.
  • Added new config file parameter “AUTOPROMPTFAIL” which specifies whether to display the test result and prompt for user intervention if the test fails even if AUTOMODE is enabled
  • Added a new config file naming convention to separate config files based on memory size: GB-mt86.cfg
  • Fixed memory size calculation to use rounding instead of truncation
  • If corrected ECC errors are detected, display the PASS message window in yellow (instead of green) at the end of the test
  • Display an error message if no valid SPD.spd file is found when SPDMATCH=1
  • Displays an error message if no SPD module was detected when SPDMATCH=1
  • Display an error message and exit MemTest86 if the CPU speed measurement fails at startup
  • Updated XML message to include CPU and SMBIOS information sent to PXE management server/console
  • Added ECC support for Intel Tiger Lake H chipset
  • Added ECC support for Intel Rocket Lake chipset
  • Added ECC support for Intel Alder Lake chipset
  • Added ECC support for Intel Ice Lake-SP chipset
  • Added support for loading CPU information for the Intel Elkhart Lake chipset
  • Added support for DIMM temperature recovery (TSOD) for Intel Alder Lake chipset
  • Fixed issue with ARM64 processor speed measurement due to disabled CPU cycle counter (PMCCNTR)
  • Fixed HTML message to display error bitmap in text when copying/pasting
  • Fixed linux badram entries in HTML assembly to be aligned by page size (4096 bytes)
  • Fixed SPD.spd parsing error when spaces appeared at the end of each line
  • Fixed issues with displaying information specific to DDR5 SPD RAM
  • Fixed support for a limited number of command line parameters in the free version
  • Fixed a bug in the overflowing text on the SPD info screen
  • Fixed not writing the REPORTNUMWARN config file parameter when saving the config file
  • The Serva PXE server configuration file is included in the Site Edition package
  • Updated Dell Precision 7760 screen display issues blacklist
